You've got the space and you've always wanted to have your own wine cellar. So what are you waiting for? Here is how to build your own wine cellar.

If you are considering building a wine cellar and you have plenty of room you'll want to way all your options. Some rooms will work better than others and some will convert much better than others. Way your options and then make your decision. A wine cellar is something you're going to have and enjoy for years to come so take your time.

A wine cellar is constructed like a fridge. If you do not do it correctly it won't work right and can cause damage to your ceiling and walls and of course your wine too. You will need to install a cooling system right into the wall. The conversion process is fairly straight forward.

1. Walls

The walls will have to have the proper insulation and vapor barrier installed with a minimum R11 on the interior walls and R19 on the exterior walls.

2. Floor

You will need concrete floors and they will need to be sealed with a vapor barrier of R19.

3. Ceiling

The ceiling requires an insulation rating of R19

4. Vapor Barrier

Use 6 mil polyethylene plastic sheeting for the vapor barrier and it needs to be on the warm side.
